Bible Quotes on Hell

Are you after Christian quotes on hell?  The following Bible Quotes on Hell are taken from the King James Bible.  They are just a few examples of many references inthe Bible which speak of the wicked being tormented forever in eternal hell fire.  These Bible Quotes on Hell come from two books in the Bible: Matthew and Revelation.  For heaps of Bible quotes on hell from both the Old and New Testaments click on the links in the menu above or use one of the five links just below.

Hell Fire    Hell's Torment     Hell is Forever / Eternal    Jesus Words on Hell    Hell is the Wrath of God

The Bible quotes on this page are from Matthew's gospel and the book of Revelation in the Bible.
Matthew is the gospel which speaks most of hell and Revelation has a special focus on heaven and hell as the final destinies of the saved and the damned.

(1) Matthews Gospel (the first book in the New Testament of the Bible) is a record of the birth, life, death and resurrection Jesus Christ.  It records his teaching, miracles, and other events during his earthly ministry.

(2) Revelation (the last book in the New Testament of the Bible) which records a vision given by Jesus to the apostle John.

NOTE: where you see something like 10:17, the first number is the chapter of the book and the second number is the verse.

Bible Quotes on Hell - Matthew's Gospel

These are the words of Jesus Christ himself

5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

[NOTE: Jesus was not saying we should start literally cutting body parts off when they lead us to sin (to save us from hell), otherwise we would have to remove our brain for all the impure thoughts that come from there!  Jesus was simply saying that hell is so terrible that if you could avoid going there by cutting off your hand or foot or plucking out your eye, then you should remove the offending part.  However we cannot avoid hell by removing a hand etc because sin originates in the heart.  Jesus said in Matthew 5:19 "For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies."]

10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Mat 23:33 [Ye] serpents, [ye] generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

[(The above quote is from Jesus Christ himself during his earthly ministry.  At the time, they are spoken to some self-righteous religious leaders - Yes, even Jesus hates the self righteous.  And so these words apply to anyone who is convinced that their own goodness will be enough to get them to heaven.

This site is not here to suggest that Christians are better people than others.  Jesus called people who had that kind of attitude, hypocrites!  This site is here to help you and anyone else who visits - Christian or not - to see that they cannot earn they way into heaven by their own goodness.  It is to help you see that there are terrible consequences to pay if you are not good in God's sight.  But it also to show you what God has done so you may escape his justice on judgement day.  Better to do the Good Person Test now, and see how you stand before a holy God, than for God to take you through it on judgement day immediately after death.]

Bible Quotes on Hell - Revelation (last book in the Bible)

Revelation is the last book in the Bible - it is full of prophecies and end time events including armageddon

1:18 I [am] he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

20:11-15

(11) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

(12) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

(13) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

(14) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  [this is not annihilation]

(15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The Lake of Fire and Hell

From the readings above it can be seen that HELL is the place where the damned go before judgement day and THE LAKE OF FIRE is the place they go after judgement day.  The Lake of Fire is therefore Eternal Hell as Hell is cast into the lake of fire which is eternal - so also is the suffering of those who are thrown into the lake of fire.  The following quotes explain this more...

Revelation 20:10 says that "...the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."  The wicked are tormented for ever.  Revelation 14:10 - 11 says that the devil and all the wicked "...shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever."

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.” - Spurgeon
